No it stays as you carved it except around the edges.

This and several other face carvings were done in live trees. This one was in the front of my home in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The tree can only survive with less than 30% of the bark removed. The water and nutrition must travel up and down through the layer just below the bark. Carve in one day and apply spar varnish to seal. Re-apply as required to protect and hold back the sap. Small drips of sap and edge growth over the years will add to the carving.

I assume this carving is on a live tree?  How long ago did you do it?  Did you do anything special to assure the tree would not have a negative affect from the carving?
