Hello Floyd and Tawodi,
To learn Old World/European basic woodcarving techniques I would recommend Chris Pye's books and DVD's. He has a free weekly Email-newsletter for which you can subscribe. Also, he writes for woodCARVING magazine quite often. That is the European magazine that is a little longer than the USA size. You can find it on the newstand at Borders or Barnes and Noble. It is a bit pricey by our standards but is a good read. European woodcarving is different & of course, that is the focus.
Chris' web site is http://chrispe-woodcarving.com
He has a writing skill that makes the topic interesting. It is an enjoyable read as well as informative/educational.
Along with Chris, I would recommend Ivan Whillock. Even though he is here in USA, he has studied European styles and has guided many tours through the woodcarving regions of Italy and Germany. Ivan is a true Master Carver by every sense of the wood. He has actually passed the criteria that deems a person a Master Carver by European standards. There are several stages and tests for this title.
Ivan's books and DVD's can be purchased at WoodcarversWarehouse.com or phone 1-888-901-8099 He writes articles for CARVING magazine here in USA. Ivan is an excellent writer as well as instructor.
Just thought I'd pass this along to you. I hope it helps. I need to settle down and digest these techniques myself. So you are both an inspiration for me to get going. (smiling)
Thanks for being a part of this group. Best Sally
