Jim Williams

In 1990 I saw a flyer at work that advertised the upcoming Belleville Holzschnitzers Woodcarving Show. I had never been to such an event and decided to check it out. I was really impressed and intrigued with all the carvings on display. I decided that I needed to get into this and bought a simple bench knife, a book, and a piece of basswood. After a lot of effort I managed to complete and paint my first carving, a Santa. I still have that carving today and look at it to remind me how far I have come since then.

I tend to dabble in every style at this pont. I can't seem to settle into anything, although I would have to admit I carve a lot of in-the-round Santas. I have also done chip carving, relief carving, cottonwood bark, cypress knees, butternut busts of various characters, lettering, etc. Besides the ever present Santa projects in my shop, I am also picking away at a one third scale carousel horse and a four and one half foot tall walnut cigar store indian. Those last two projects have been around for quite a while but I am determined to complete them.

Really everything.

Carving really good character faces for Santas and other figures.

Fishing when I get the chance. Unfortunately I don't have a boat of my own.
